Kathy Woolverton is the President of Synergy Computer Consulting Ltd., a company she founded in 1989. Synergy Computer Consulting Ltd. specializes in system design and related services.
The company has been involved in hundreds of software projects.
Additionally, she has experience in international business relations, focusing on software import and export.
Synergy Computer Consulting is 36 years old. What is the story behind it?
Initially, I was doing software development and business analysis. I started with medical billing software. Then, I went into ERP and plant operation management. I started getting bigger and bigger projects, creating teams and hiring people.
We also had some technologies that we were experts in, so I started getting calls from people who needed the skill set. The company started growing, and the combination of understanding both business and technology worked quite well.
How do you overcome the challenges of owning a business?
One of them is learning about new technologies and changes in the environment. For example, when it started, the Internet wasn't around. And so, getting involved in that early was important, and learning what was possible. Getting more education, belonging to industry associations, and participating in those associations. It's a great way of learning, getting connected, getting a pulse of what people are doing, and being involved in the marketplace.
And then, because we've worked with so many different industries over the years, you get outside the box thinking and strategies you can apply to different industries. So, that was good to bring a fresh perspective to projects that we're working on.
During COVID-19, I was working on an infection prevention and control system. So much learning on the fly and working with the users undergoing a very stressful situation. We dealt with the medical side and changing the software simultaneously.
In those thirty-six years that you have, like Synergy Computer Consulting, did you achieve success?
It grew much bigger than I expected. There are the right projects we love, starting smaller and getting bigger. I got pulled in to manage massive projects. Big teams and big budgets significantly impacted the businesses, and it was great to be involved in some of those significant transformations from different organizations. It makes me proud of what I have done and how I have improved things for the users and business.
If you could advise younger Kathy, what would it be?
You can do it. Always keep learning. Don't be afraid to jump into things you don't necessarily have experienced with even new challenges.
